Description

"'Well, well, well,' said Courfeyrac, and he stood as we entered, kissing my aunt's hand.  'Agnès, my little enchantress, don't you look charming.'  And, to me: 'You're not half bad yourself.'

'A generous compliment, if ever I heard one,' I answered.  I pushed past him, saying, 'Combeferre, thank you for coming—I do appreciate the favor.'

Combeferre was staring at me, but he caught himself quickly and said, dropping his eyes, 'You're…You look beautiful.'

Courfeyrac burst out laughing, and said, 'This is your first time meeting the young lady, hm.'

'Shut up, Courfeyrac,' I ordered, my eyes flashing.  'Leave him alone.'

'It's all right,' said Combeferre with a self-deprecating laugh.  'I rather expected that it would be a little odd at the beginning, but I'll get used to it.'  He took my hand and shook it, man to man, and he added, 'But you are lovely.'

'You look nice yourself,' I said.  'You combed your hair for once.'

'I always comb my hair,' he protested.  'It just doesn't stay that way for long.'"

Virago, 1828.13

At one point in the story, female Enjolras drags Combeferre along to a high society ball to keep her company, which requires serious dress-up.  He does clean up nice, but I also suspect this clean-up has Courfeyrac's pushy little fingerprints all over it.  I can just imagine the bro party they had before this ball, for the purpose of bro primping...
