Another one I was intending to color, honest! I just figured that if I had worked on it for a bit and I still preferred the lineart over the Photoshopped version, that was probably a sign.
Anyway, this is the scene from the St-Exupery book, "Le Petit Prince" (The Little Prince) that always makes me bawl like a baby. It's that one where the petit prince has tamed the fox, and then he has to go, and the fox is all like, 'Oh, I'm going to cry,' and the petit prince is all like, 'Well, it's not my fault--you haven't gained anything by becoming my friend,' and the fox is all like (*sniff!*), 'J'y gagne, a cause de la couleur du ble,' referring to the color of petit prince's hair, and just...Wahhhh!!! (Okay, if you know the scene I'm talking about, it's a lot sadder than that in context, so boo. )
So, in case you couldn't tell, the prince is on the left and the fox on the right. You all will forgive me, but I kinda just felt like drawing the fox as a bishounen. XD Not like I'm trying to imply yaoi or anything, but whatever...If you want to take it that way, be my guest. And for some reason, medieval Japan seemed like a cool thing to apply to this, esp. because of the prominence of foxes in Shinto mythology.
O_o Srsly? It's like you're running a special today on all my favorite French literary character. Javert and now this? What's next, some Erik? It's like Christmas in June.
Much love for this. The take on the fox is adorable. And that moment is priceless - I think the only time I cry more is when the Prince tells the pilot that when he looks at the stars they'll be more beautiful because he has a friend there that he can think of.
It's a beautiful story and this is lovely art that does it justice.

"The question was write anything... and you got it wrong. I'm speechless."
Okay, A) You had me at Petit Prince. Back in high school, when I was taking French, we struggled through this book as our first foray into reading untranslated long passages, and,
B) I just about cried in front of Madame and everyone at the fox. Beautiful scene that must have stayed with me.
C) Mega squee for feudal Japan as well.

It's pictures like this that make me wish I knew how to read in French, so I could actually try to read Le Petit Prince. Your work is gorgeous, as always

Mm, yeah, I cried in front of pretty much everybody walking through the library lobby when I was reading that part. But it's okay, because at the time, I really didn't give a crap who was watching. I had a friend in that French class who actually cried a lot when we read the fox passage in class...
