Javert makes hakama cool again by cillabub Javert makes hakama cool again by cillabub
Okay, this is my first time drawing Javert, everyone congratulate me for breaking out, haha. The truth is, I've had this Javert in my head for some time--he's dressed like a Japanese policeman from the late Edo time period (that is, from around the time Les Mis was actually supposed to take place--1820s-30s). Except for the boots. Those aren't period at all, I just kinda liked them with the hiked-up hakama (plus, how could you have a Javert with bare, hairy legs and sandals? eww...Javert=big boots. Period.). The only reason why I wanted to draw him in this period is for that thing he's holding in his hand--the jutte. It's the special truncheon that all Japanese cops carried, and I remember the first time I saw one, I thought, wow, Javert would look even cooler if he had a cooler truncheon to swing around...:D Plus he has the right hair to make one of those Edo-style top knots. My boyfriend's been pressing me to draw this, and MadameJavert also asked me to draw a chibi!Javert, so I figured this was decently close to a chibi!Javert...kinda...sorta...^^;

And I adore your lineart!

Javert...Is going to be laughed at by all of the criminals in France. But I think he's adorable, and you drew him well. The haughty expression is perfect for him. :)

Javert would have fit right in there! Strict moral codes and no mercy for wrongdoers. And, of course, he DOES make the clothes look damn good!

That's...new. I've never seen Javert in anything other than a trenchcoat, it's actually kinda interesting. And you're right...Javert needs his big boots. *clutches said boots protectively*

Oh... Javert is a samurai! So I'm not the only one who feels this! He is clearly a samurai - honourable, proud, fatalist. And he knows how to depart...

That is rather genius work. It does remind me of Gilbert and Sullivan's "Lord High Executioner," though I'm sure that would please Javert very much.

I really DO wonder why now everyone loves Javert so much. he's the frikkin' villian in the story of Les Miz! He constantly tries to do in Jean, and tried to lock up poor Fantine when she was clearly in the right! and I quote from the book "would put away his own mother if she broke her bonds" or something like that.

so what *is* his appeal?? I certianly don't know. Furthermore, I continue to fangirl.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! JAVERT!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally, I thought Thenardier was far more the villain. Thenardier was deceptive, ungrateful and ruthless, whereas Javert kept very strictly to his codes, until the whole post-barricade affair, of course. Until I was twelve (when I first read Les Miserables,) my whole understanding of the book had been gained from a two- to three-minute synopsis by my mother, the Javert-hater. Her version of the story had been taken from a five-tape audio reduction of the thing. Of course, she had skipped the whole part where Javert asks for his letting-off from Madelaine. (I bet I spelled that wrong.) Once I ran into that in the book, I suddenly liked him. My mother had painted a very different picture than the book did. And yes, I am a fangirl as well, or very close to it.

the Madelaine (spelling? who cares) bit is when he's all depressed post-barricade, right? it took me half a year to read all of Les Miz, I don't remember some parts so well.

but yeah, now that I look at it that way, I would say that Thenardier is the villian and Javert is just a stubborn git. a stubborn git that has about a thousand fangirls.

Not post-barricade... pre- by years. It's when Valjean is mayor under an assumed name nobody can type, and Javert is in charge of the police there. He was suspicious of Valjean, and denounced him in Paris, a bit after a man named Champmateiu had been arrested for poaching apples. This Champmatieu was assumed to be Jean Valjean, the resemblance being verified by three convicts who had known him in the galleys. The Parisian police thus convinced Javert that he was incorrect in his guess. His only reason, then, for denouncing the mayor was his anger over an affair six weeks prior when Valjean very openly ordered him out during a disagreement over Fantine's treatment. Sorry if my explanation took a bit longer than I meant...

you're right about the whole Javert-not-being-a-villain thing...he IS just doing what he thinks is right. As for Thenardier, he knows he's lying-cheating-stealing-no-good-rotten-a-hole. And he continues being one. he's pure evil :rage:

I find it strange myself...I was never much of a Javert fangirl, but in the six years (makes me sound like a loser! :XD:) that I've been on the online Les Mis community, there have always been Javert fangirls...They are a very persistent breed, it seems, a fine rival to the LesAmis!fangirls, and they could beat the stuffing out of 'Ponine!fangirls, IMHO...:D So kudos to the Snookums!fangirls--you ladies are just beginning to woo me to the dark side...!

:nod: Very nice job on the costume matching. I am pleased and satisfied with its historical fitting-in-ness, despite the boots. He looks quite arrogant and pleased with himself, doesn't he? :clap: Yes, very nice. For once, I can actually tell if something is historical or not.
